ACCESS

NR ACCESS

Include disability. Create belonging.

At New River Fellowship, we believe everyone belongs and brings gifts to the body of Christ. We believe every person is created in the image of God, has unique gifts to offer, and deserves to be known, loved, and included in the life of the church.

First Time Family Experience

When a family arrives at New River Fellowship, they can expect to be welcomed by a caring NR Access team member who will help them understand available supports and find the best environment for their loved one. Each person’s needs are different, so we begin by learning about the individual — their strengths, communication style, preferences, sensory needs, and any support they may need to participate.

Step One: Check in

First Time Families will begin by checking in at the designated NR Access Check Station in the courtyard.

Accommodations & Support

NR Access provides accommodations designed to help individuals participate comfortably and meaningfully. Available supports may include:

1:1 Buddy Support

A trained volunteer may be paired with an individual to provide additional assistance during ministry environments. A buddy may help with participation in activities, communication support, transitions, social connection, sensory needs, and safety support.

Communication Support

We welcome individuals who communicate in different ways, including nonverbal, communication devices, gestures, or visual systems.

Sensory Support

NR Access provides sensory-friendly options for individuals who may need a quieter environment or sensory tools. This may include a sensory room, quiet space, sensory tools and activities, and a place to regulate before returning to the larger environment.

Modified Curriculum

Bible lessons and activities may be adapted to meet different learning and communication needs. Adaptations may include visual supports, hands-on activities, simplified concepts, sensory-based learning, and alternative communication methods.

Your Questions Answered

How do I register for NR Access?

Families can begin by completing the NR Access registration/intake process. This allows our team to learn about your loved one before their first visit.

Can I stay with my family member?

Unfortunately, in our Kids and Tots areas we want to keep our children safe and in order to do that, all of our volunteers go through an extensive background check and safety training video. No parents are allowed in these areas unless escorted by a NR Access team member in an emergency situation or for changing a child unable to use the restroom.

What if my family member is non-verbal or uses a communication device?

We welcome individuals with all communication styles. Our team will partner with families to understand the best ways to communicate and support their loved one.

What is the buddy system?

The buddy system pairs an individual with a trained volunteer who provides additional support during ministry activities.

A buddy helps encourage participation, provide assistance, and build relationships.

How do you handle medications, allergies, or toileting needs?

Families will provide important medical and care information during registration so our team can understand how to best support each individual.

What ages does NR Access serve?

NR Access currently serves children and teens.

What happens if my loved one has a hard day?

If additional support is needed, our team will contact the parent/caregiver using the information provided during registration.
